At first I just felt like going home and putting my pajamas back on and getting in bed, and I was on the verge of doing so, but then instead of putting my pajamas on when I got undressed, I put my running clothes on!
And I went running!

For a very long time (and wanted to go longer but I thought that would be a bad idea).
Then I lifted lots of weights.
Then I did lots of stretching. And worked on my back. And I'm not sure, but I did something to it, and I either broke it or fixed it. So I figure that's a good thing.

And now I feel lots better.

Oh, you know what else makes you feel better?

SFSers, DO THE POLL!!! Oh boy did I just take out a bunch of rage on Dean Handley! Oh boy!! Even if he's not your curricular dean there is still space to comment on whoever you want! (Only I kept saying "my curricular dean" to keep things civil.)
Then later in the poll I said "I love Simin!" cause she makes me crack up (but I didn't say that part).

(Oh btw the reason I wanted to put the jammies on is cause I'm going back in the hospital. And my new doctor...after a 2+ hour appointment, said that we have lots of "difficult discussions" to come. It's nothing that I didn't anticipate I guess, but it doesn't mean I can't want to climb in bed with Sarah's ice cream.)

Another note:
As I just said to Bridget,
if I had a guest in my house and they were uncomfortable around me or didn't like me, I would feel hurt and insulted. And even if I tried my best to be a good host and not show it, I probably would. And I can only assume that it's the same with ghosts. So I don't think I should stay there again until I come to terms with ghosts. It's only good manners, right? Maybe I will bring Peter over when I clean up the bathroom, and then we can talk to James while I do it. Cause it would freak me out if I were just talking to James and then James came and I was all by myself. But Peter is ok with it. Whereas I would just start crying a whole bunch and then go crazy.

Also Peter laughed and said that when he dies he's going to haunt me like crazy and follow me around everywhere cause he thinks it would be hilarious.
Well a side comment before I get back to the ghost story:

I do not watch a lot of late-night talk shows (Leno, Conan etc). However in the past week or two I have for some reason managed to catch two separate shows both featuring little kids who have memorized an amazingly boring amount of Presidential trivia. One was a little girl who wasn't in kindergarten yet, she was a cutie, but tonight on Leno they had this 8-year-old who was just this little snot. Wow what an asshole. Then he said look for me on the Republican ticket in 2036 or something like that! Figures he'd be a Republican. But what's the deal with all these kids running around memorizing President stuff? Weird.

Anyway, I was recounting my story to my brother Peter, who dog-sits frequently for these mansion folk. (No, the dogs were NOT there last night, they are members of the family and as such are on vacation with them for the month!!) He laughed and said, "oh, James was around?" I said, huh? So apparently the ghostie has a name. James. It's painted in the basement, on the floor under the stairs or something like that (I'M not gonna go a'huntin for it). Peter immediately began telling me about things James does, before I could even finish my story to him he was halfway finishing it for me! Then he continued. "Oh, James does the silliest things all the time in the house." James likes to have things the way he likes them, or play tricks on people, just check things out in the house all the time. Opening cabinets when no one is around, locking doors (Peter says he was once locked out of his bedroom and had to go find a master key in the basement to get back in. Sheila has had similar experiences.) Lots of things. Peter and Sheila both think James was just checking out what someone was doing in that part of the house, since no one is usually using my suite of rooms. Also I made a big crash and a big mess when I broke the glass towel rack in the bathroom (which I still have to go back and clean up), which Sheila thinks probably attracted him over to my area even more, seeing what was a-happenin'. Peter thought it sounded hilarious and that he was probably playing a trick on me (since I still don't understand how it broke off the wall considering I was more APPROACHING it than hanging my towel with many pounds of force upon it), which I don't buy so much as just a glass towel rack breaking, but hey whatever.

Soooo....however ridiculous Paul thinks I am for being freaked out by "things that don't exist" and Sheila and Peter think I am for being freaked out by "silly James", I decided not to sleep there tonight...or until I am not weirded out by the idea of sleeping in a haunted mansion. Sheila says she doesnt think he came in my room last night cause I would have KNOWN she says, I am not sure what that means but I am pretty sure I don't want to either. (She says unless that is what woke you wide awake in the middle of the night, which freaks me out to be woken up by a ghost, but I guess it's one life experience to cross of my list, huh?)

I think knowing his name is a little bit FREAKY but also perhaps a little comforting.
So as far as we know, Sarah, not vengeful ghost. Curious, bored ghost.
So I spent last night in my sister's mansion, in which she has offered me a suite of rooms for the next month or so. It's not bad, a tad cold cause I'm on the third floor (servants' quarters, you know), and I don't know where this mysterious door next to my bed leads to (probably a room full of heads in boxes or something AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH), but hey, it's a mansion, not gonna complain much more. Hehe. Plus the kitchen floor is cool, tile so it's cold but then when I said that this morning she said, well, turn on the floor heater! Haha, they've got this thing under the tiles that heats up the floor! So you can walk around in your socks and not be cold!!!! Awesome. And a workout room in the basement.

But anyways. I couldn't sleep last night. Not a wink. Well, I did for a couple hours when I first went to bed cause I finally got to take the nice hot luxurious bath I had been wanting to take for EVVVVVVVER (I have not taken a bath in years I think, but here I had bath salts and hot water and candles and evverything right there. And then when I got out I broke the towel rack right off the wall. Haha!!)

So I was nice and cozily warm and got in bed with all my quilts and pillows and was sleepy and went to sleep. Then I woke up. And was 100% absolutely wide awake. Now if I had been living there longer, perhaps I would have gotten up and say, watched TV. Or done my running in the basement (which is mostly finished, so it's not really a basement)....but I lay in bed for an hour or two in the pitch black, just lying there wishing I would fall asleep. Finally I decided that was doing no good and I got up and turned on the light and decided to read some book, which I did, and it was good, and I finished it. And wrote an entire essay for a fellowship application due tomorrow, which was also good. And I was also still wide awake. So I started reading another book, and got quite a ways into it. Man that was no fun. I mean the awake part, not the weirdly-productive part.

But at about 5:30 (I had had the light on for 1/2 hour at this point, been awake for 2-3 hours), I hear my sister walking through my hallway. I'm not really sure what she's doing, cause she has the suite of rooms on the other half of the third (fourth? I don't remember) floor. But she goes back and forth a couple times, and goes in my bathroom, and I figure she is just retrieving stuff cause she's got a shitload of stuff in there that of course I used. ("Mary! You left my lotion out and the label was NOT facing forwards!!") I don't know why she's up so early cause I know she doesn't have class til the evening, but she went to bed around 10:30 so whatever, maybe she's going to work out or something. After she walks around a bit I find it kinda funny that as I have my light on she doesn't come say hi to me. I think of calling out to her but then I think, ohmygod, what if it's NOT her??? What if it's a scary murderer come to murder me and they never would have found me in the far reaches of the mansion except for the fact that I couldn't sleep and I have the light on?? So I become verrrrrrry quiet and don't want to breathe anymore, (while formulating a plan of how to attack with my pen if they decide to open the door) and eventually the murderer (or Sheila) walks off to another part of the house. This was while I was writing my essay, so then I read my book for a bit to get my mind off of it, then quietly get up and turn off the light to get some more sleep.

11 am, someone pounds on the door. This time it IS Sheila, wondering why the hell I am sleeping so late, and she has just gotten done working out. I explain that I was up half the night, then I say, "Why were you up so early, wandering around?" She says, "what do you mean? I got up around 9 or 9:30." I tell her about what happened, and she shrugs and says, "oh yeah, those are just our ghosts. Didn't I tell you? They used to set off the alarms all the time until we got a new alarm system. It used to freak me out when I was here alone overnight."

Ummmm so yeah. I now am staying in a haunted mansion. Maybe you are all laughing at me (except for Bridget cause I know you will be my staunch ally in this) but uhhh that kinda is not so cool with me. Don't know if I feel comfortable going home alone to that (which if I move in for the month I will be doing a lot of). Especially when I don't know who these ghosts are or what kind of heads in boxes are behind the door in my room.

So I looked at both Kerry and Edwards and their past voting patterns look virtually identical. So I guess it comes down to, who will beat Bush? I kind of prefer that Edwards does NOT have military experience; Kerry has said that the US should retain the right to preemptive strikes or something like that and I do not so much like that. It is beneficial to have a civilian in the CinC position, to offer an alternate, non-militarized view.

But who will beat Bush, that's what I'm going for. Edwards is younger and I think the American people will like that. Although I think his smile is kinda creepy, he was voted sexiest politician at one point, so that could go over well with people.
Hmm.
I did the selectsmart quiz again, because I didn't take a reeal close look at my results last time and I was curious about them. I think I probably changed some of my answers, cause I remember the Socialist candidate having a higher percentage (in the 90s), and some other folks being switched around. Ah well, it's not like I was gonna love whoever I chose always and forever anyways.

Here's what I got this time:
1. Your ideal theoretical candidate. (100%)
2. Socialist Candidate (89%)
3. Sharpton, Reverend Al - Democrat (83%)
4. Kucinich, Rep. Dennis, OH - Democrat (81%)
5. Dean, Gov. Howard, VT - Democrat (80%)
6. Clark, Retired General Wesley K., AR - Democrat (80%)
7. Moseley-Braun, Former Senator Carol, IL - Democrat (76%)
8. Kerry, Senator John, MA - Democrat (75%)
9. Edwards, Senator John, NC - Democrat (73%)
10. Gephardt, Rep. Dick, MO - Democrat (65%)
11. LaRouche, Lyndon H. Jr. - Democrat (47%)
12. Lieberman, Senator Joe, CT - Democrat (44%)
13. Libertarian Candidate (26%) Click here for info
14. Bush, President George W. - Republican (12%)
15. Constitution Party Candidate (8%)

I am sooooooooooooooo sorry for that #14 up there, and so humiliated, too! I hang my head in shame. I bet it's cause I said the environment was a medium instead of high priority. (Paul, we don't meet up until #7!! That's kinda questionable.)

Narrowing the list down to those actually IN the running, I get:
1. Your ideal theoretical candidate. (100%)
2. Sharpton, Reverend Al - Democrat (83%)
3. Kucinich, Rep. Dennis, OH - Democrat (81%)
4. Kerry, Senator John, MA - Democrat (75%)
5. Edwards, Senator John, NC - Democrat (73%)
6. Bush, President George W. - Republican (12%)

So I have to decide who to vote for in the caucus...I guess you've made our plans for Tuesday night? Um, I guess that means I should probably look at Kerry and Edwards platforms a little more closely (ok at all). Cause uhhh Sharpton and Kucinich ain't getting elected.

Nader is going to run, as an independent (for those of you who don't watch read or listen to the news).
I don't think he made a wise choice...he said it was due to his desire to "retire our supremely selected president"...but Ralphie don't you think that with all your "careful thought" you could have come up with a better way? Dammit.

Saturday, February 21, 2004

Hey guys!!!!

Get out and vote! March 2nd is the caucus and from what I hear Minnesota can still make a difference, and to some people, it matters! So register for the party, and go do it.

You can find your precinct and caucus location at www.dfl.org (1754, we are both at Highland Jr High, 975 S Snelling, #W-4 P-9).

"When: Tuesday, March 2, 2004 7:00 pm (must be open at least one hour). Registration will begin at 6:30pm. The caucuses will officially begin at 7:00pm. Presidential preference balloting will end at 8:00pm."
"Who can participate in precinct caucuses?
Anyone can attend the precinct caucus to observe. To be eligible to participate in the DFL precinct caucuses, a person must satisfy the following requirements:
· The person must reside in the precinct.
· To run for county unit convention delegate or alternate, or vote on the presidential preference ballot, the person must be 18 years old and otherwise qualified to vote by November 2, 2004.
· The person must not be an active member of any other political party.
· The person must agree with the DFL principles as stated in the State DFL Constitution & Bylaws. "

It says you can sign in when you get there so I BELIEVE you don't have to do any sort of registering before the caucus.

Here's an interesting website, it asks you a bunch of questions and then tells you who you are most aligned with for a presidential candidate:

http://selectsmart.com/president

I got to it from the MN College Dems page. Apparently I am a socialist through and through, and Al Sharpton is my best buddy. After the green party, or any socialist candidate. Interesting.

Paul, I think this is the website we were looking for:

Political Compass Quiz

It is another quiz, which I did really quickly this time cause I just wanted to get to the end and see if it was the right website, but I ended up roughly where I thought I would (and where I did on the SelectSmart website, between "Left" and "Libertarian"), they marked me close to the Dalai Lama.
(Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -6.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.46)
Yeah that's right, eat it, I think that means I'm holy. Or something.

Hmmm, I don't really know anything about Milton Friedman, the only person they list in the "Libertarian Right" quadrant, and even he is not very far into it. Does anyone know him? Tell me about him.
They list the Pope as a Lefty. Interesting. (But an Authoritarian lefty, like Stalin. I guess it's probably all his talk about Catholic charity and whatnot, Catholics are technically supposed to be pretty socialist.) But ol' Georgie is the farthest right example they have on their website. Haha.

Alright enough of this.

Thursday, February 19, 2004

Well Eliot is spending his time as he most enjoys, and talking politics. But we're proud of him cause he got an article published, and here's the Nader-bashing link:

"Who's to blame for 2000?"

(Good job, Eliot!!!!)

But I do disagree with some things, and since this is my blog, haha, I get to have a louder voice than anyone else.
And 1754 has heard all these several times before, so 1754 can skip the next paragraph.

I think it was important for Nader to run in 2000. I do agree that in today's political situation in America, third-party presidential candidates are perhaps not the best idea, and perhaps the Green Party (and others) should attempt to instead build up through congressional and gubernatorial candidates and get a better voter base before attempting to make a run for the presidency. HOWEVER. Nader got his name and his campaign out there. The voters realized that there were alternatives to the centrist parties and the Green Party gained enough votes in many places to gain federal funding. Great! The election in 2000 didn't seem, at that time, as crucial as it is this year, so it was a good choice to run (who knew 9-11 was going to happen? And please nobody post comments saying the FBI knew cause I don't even want to get INTO that!!)
THIS election, however, it would just be stupid for Nader to run. Lots of things are stupid. The Dems are being stupid, getting into fights and making everyone hate them -- at least the GOP is sticking together. I don't want to see Nader run either, because I think he could be a major spoiler, and it is sooo important to get Bush out of office...but I don't blame him for the last four years. I blame that stupid incompetent man we call Mr. President, plus some election-rigging (you really think if Nader hadn't run, Bush wouldn't still have won?)
The end.

Poll:

What's your favorite sound?

Mine:
(second favorite): An orchestra warming up.

But really, the first time it gets above freezing and hearing the snow and ice melting into the sewers.
Oh, I also wanted to say a very big personal thank you to MARY (not me, notice the absence of self-affirming exclamation points) for allowing her email account to receive a very long email which made me feel much better to write. And to all her professors: stop assigning papers, dammit, she's an econ major!!
Alright, for 1754 and those who don't know, and since I was ruther confused by some things anyway this will probably be an incorrect post, but:

Gold body paint. R was invited (along with the rest of 1401?) to her (non-)girlfriend's party where her (non-)gf was going to be dressed in nothing but gold body paint. Tempting, but unfortunately I couldn't find a plane ticket in time. Or enough body paint of my own. Oh wait, I didn't wanna go. And no, I have no updates on the situation, and not sure I want any. But here is the perfect place to leave them, if anyone cares to.

Sarah, congratulations on the rabbit! I do prefer them to hamsters. What kind are you getting? (Color, floppy-eared or non? Or is one moving up from Florida?) And if you want I will feed it on the weekends, unless you are gone EVERY weekend, unless you let me move into your apt every weekend, or else I will mutter things on my blog about you. Haha. But you will be very amusing to me with your lap-dog-like accessory. Does it get a collar and leash for public travel?
Um, did I ever tell you, so this might be a repeat, that someone from CERES was at Macalester a couple weeks ago, on a panel? (I kept passing the flyer and thinking, I should email sarah about that, so I'm not sure if I thought it so many times that it only seems like I did it, or if I actually did.) Her name was Laura something. (Laura A.?)

JCS: For the not-knowing, JCS is this "Scholars" thing at Gtown which technically is an honors thing but I, for one, only got in cause my interviewer knew it paid a scholarship every year, and I needed money, so he signed me up. (If you don't get in that way you have to apply and be extra-anti-social and overachieving and have like a 4.0) So some of us are just there for the money, and some are there cause they want to foster "The Life of the Mind" (their favorite phrase, but in Latin) on campus and "reach out" to their less-intellectual peers, or something like that. HA!!!!! I haven't done anything with or for it since freshman year (the mandatory seminar class), but continue to receive the money. Apparently this year they got a big donation or something, so now you can be a JC "fellow", who is someone that just gets the money (yayyy!!!) or a JC "scholar", who gets to be a big dork. Guess which one I chose. (Well actually, it said respond to this letter if you want to be a fellow instead of a scholar, and since I haven't responded to anything they've sent in 3 years, I threw the letter out. I figured that they can figure it out.)

My 3-year-old sister the other day called me to the computer quite distressed. "Mary!" she says, "I can't find Barbie.com!!" I go over to the computer and start laughing, because instead of barbie.com, she has somehow managed to stumble on a lesbian porn site and is clicking her way through that. This is going to be hilarious in about a week, because my father does periodic history checks on the computer to make sure no one is visiting any porn sites etc, so I can just see the storm of rage that visits the house, while my brother (who also was in the room when this happened) and I sit back and chuckle. We'll wait for a while to tell him that it was his 3-year-old daughter visiting the websites.

Off to the gym and the post office.

A message for some gtown folk (S in particular, although she didn't just receive "The Scholar" in the mail so she will have no idea what I'm talking about. Borrow one from someone, although it probably went straight in the trash.)

So the John Carrolls has this newsletter that is full of stupid articles that I'm not reading, but there is one on the back that I noticed as I was tossing it out that begins "Students at Georgetown frequently complain that despite the intellectual caliber of the population here, conversations are often limited to comments about the weather, workloads, and weekend plans..."
Umm, number one, I haven't heard many people complain about that, and number two, my conversations have never been limited to the the 3 Ws. Now, not to make us sound like the biggest SFSers in existence, but I do know that there were many more than one weekend night that (ahem cough cough) and I had long conversations about topics such as trans-state gas pipelines in Central Asia and the implications for foreign policy that these made. And no, 1754, these were not all because I was writing a paper on pipelines (actually I don't think I ever wrote a paper on pipelines. Maybe I did. I dunno.)

So JCS started this new program to bring the lil' JCs together to discuss topics, cause they can't just find people on their own to discuss them with. Well guess what, too bad I guess they all need to start up their own blogs or something and then they can discuss alllll they want (haHA 1754, and S, can't shut me up NOW!) But seriously. If they just don't hang out with dumb people who only discuss the weather and how drunk they are going to get that weekend, then ummm, they won't only be discussing that, so I think it's their fault for that. Strike up a conversation, people!

JC.

I'm so glad that JCs turned into a money-giving machine now instead of a mandatory thing. The end.

OK. I looked all over the MN BCA website, and it appears that the writer of today's letter to the editor (Pioneer Press) criticizing the coverage of the Dru Sjodin case (and he does make a qualifying statement at the beginning, I'll give him that, saying he just wants more attention on the rest, TOO, not any taken away from her, etc, or something like that) chose his facts very carefully from those listed on the site.

Yes, 3,000 to 5,000 non-family abductions occur in MN every year. HOWEVER, the website clearly states that these are "short-term" abductions... only 200-300 of these are abductions in which the abductee is "gone overnight, killed, or transported a distance of 50 miles or more...The largest percentage of victims in non-family abductions are adolescent girls between the ages 11 and 14 and boys between 6 and 9 years old." So Dru already doesn't fit the statistics, making her a unique case. I looked over pages of "missing" flyers and descriptions and found that of many of the people NOT assumed abducted by family members, they were known to have mental disorders. This does not mean that their disappearance is less sad for the family, but it can mean that it is more likely that the person wandered off of their own accord. Still need to be found? Yes. A cause for a massive hunt because we think we know who the abductor/killer is and he perhaps shouldn't have been out in the public in the first place? No, obviously.

Even if Dru were found alive, just because she is blond-haired and blue-eyed (oh, oops, she was born in Minnesota) doesn't lessen the need for media coverage for her (although at this point I don't think it can do very much for her, unless someone finds her and recognizes her, we all know her face now. At the beginning I think it was more than appropriate.) It was a unique, scary case in that HER BOYFRIEND FUCKING HEARD HER GET KIDNAPPED!! AND SHE TRIED TO CALL HIM BACK!! JC, what is wrong here?! (As I said to Paul, you better make sure I have a damn good amount of media coverage if I ever get kidnapped!!) Second, the coverage she is getting now is just the occasional blurb of "search started back up" or "search shut down because of cold or snow," nothing huge...and THIRD, her kidnapping started an important dialogue in Minnesota about the rules of punishment and release of sexual offenders (and haha made our governor look really stupid when he suggested the death penalty for them, which has already been deemed unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court). I realize it doesn't hurt the public's interest in her case that she was a cute college student, but it doesn't mean that that should backfire against her twice because some sick sexual predator is thus attracted to her.
Elizabeth Smart, everyone was complaining about her media coverage too...she was kidnapped right before I went into the hospital last summer so I got to watch on TV every day about her, but you know what? It majorly dropped off when she vanished without any more leads. I tried to find more on her months later, and I couldn't find a single word, cause there wasn't any. People make this up in their own minds. Hers was a rather fascinating story too, though, and thus worthy of media coverage.

JC people. JC.

k I'm done ranting, and then none of you have to hear it in person later.
Good point in paper today:
Column itself wasn't that great, but there was a column in the paper today titled "Civil unions, once radical, are now the middle ground." Just keep pushing and people eventually will see it as normal?
I hadn't heard of the Frisco ruling until today, but that was kinda neat too, although I'm unsure why people like the couple from MN flew out there to suddenly get married instead of flying out to Mass. or something earlier, like "oh, I've always wanted to get married in California!!" I dunno. But ok.

Post in a minute about media coverage of the Dru Sjodin case (everyone out in DC know what that is? Let me know if you don't.) But I have to look some facts up first.

Sunday, February 15, 2004

So Peter and I went to Target tonight to check out the clearance racks for that special valentine of mine (man, NOW you guys are all wishing you had asked me to be your valentine!!!) and besides all the ... interesting ... things that he convinced me not to purchase (and one gift that we forgot, I'm very sorry, valentine!!), we had a lovely checkout. First I got to see Eric, the nervous highschool checkout boy who works about 800 hours a week, I'm sure, because I don't think he has ever NOT been there, especially when I am buying tampons. But better than that was the guy behind us in line, who was buying a plunger and heavy-duty toilet cleaner. That's it. I was just not wanting to imagine what was going on in his bathroom but I couldn't help thinking of scenarios -- strangely, he was in a quite jovial mood though. Maybe he is planning on mussying up the bathroom before leaving on vacation but is kindly buying supplies for his unsuspecting roommates to clean up after him. I don't know.

We also nearly barrelled into a gigantic SUV limo...I don't think we would have been the winner in that one. Shortly after that, Peter didn't notice us running straight through a red light next to a freeway exit ramp. That is until I screamed SHIT, PETER!! and grabbed my door handle (to save me). Luckily no one was coming, so we jollily kept going. Phew.

ALSO. Does India really need nuclear weapons? Cause they created that funny little arms race with Pakistan, whose conventional army could never stand up to them, but now that they have nuclear weapons, they can, but India's military power is still over 2 million strong -- and they only spend $14 billion a year!! So I'm thinking that remember Iran's human wave? Why can't India just employ similar tactics in the event of a war? C'mon, move all your men (I don't think there are very many women in India's military. But I could be wrong and judgmental. I apologize.) to the Pak border and just swarm 'em.

Craving starburst jelly beans. Reason #2 for going to Target. Target all out. Quite disappointed and let down. Must make up for this by eating other sugary things. Wait, did I eat anything real today?

By special request of E:
They asked me to rate 1-5 the following: (1 being very dissatisfied, 5 being very satisfied)
Financial situation, living arrangement, education, social life, sex life, and ummm one other that i dont remember, something not exciting. Don't worry E (and someone else who pretends they read this blog but really doesn't and thus won't care if I post this), I rated both my social life and my sex life as 5s (everything else got 1s).

Sorry I have been a bad poster. I really should do better, and I will try. I really hope you didn't go to the gold body paint party. Man, you know what, I should make like 2 separate blogs, or hey, I have a better idea, I will come up with some code names for people on both ends, cause then I can talk about them with no fears!!

Yes. Well done. I need to make a coffee cake now.

Yesterday I had a 3-hour EEG. Naturally I was cured the second I got all glued up, cause that's what electrodes do best for you. I was rather pissed. Oh well. I didn't really expect anything to show. I just hate when they do the strobe light in your eyes, cause it doesn't give me seizures, it's just annoying as hell. Then they ordered me to go to sleep. (Ummm, most people can't just fall asleep on command...luckily I was really tired anyways, so it so happened that I could. Cause on EEGs they can tell if you're faking asleep, that's why in the hospital they would always come in early in the morning if they had woken me up and I was trying to go back to sleep, they would say "I saw your brainwaves, and you're awake! Let's do these tests!!" Jerk-faces.)

Last night my brother (who's in town from California til tomorrow) was driving his junker-car around town and oops, speeding (dear lord, that thing is a death-trap I don't even want to drive below the speed limit in it!!) Well, he got pulled over at about 2 in the morning, and just so happens his license has been revoked for a while -- without his knowledge. He got a speeding ticket in Iowa last summer, and decided not to pay it, because he wasn't planning on ever going back to Iowa, so he figured it'd be fine. Nope!! So they told him to get out of the car, and they towed his car away, and left him in the freezing cold, just on the street, in the middle of the night. So he now has to pay
1) the old ticket, plus all the fines that have piled up
2) a new speeding ticket
3) today had to pay to get his car back
4) money to get his driver's license back if he wants it.
Man that kinda sucks. This kid really is learning a lot of stuff the hard way. He was about to take out a loan to buy a Harley. I wonder if he is still going to do that...I don't think that's really affordable at the moment. (The original ticket that started this mess was about $250 in itself, before all the fines.)

Alright, off to make a coffee cake, then maybe something for my special valentine.

Bridget just asked me to be her valentine!!!

Awwwwwww :) :) :)
Some questions from the 25-page extra-thorough medical history form I have to fill out in order to see this new neuro:

How satisfied are you, on a scale of 1-5, with your sex life?

What are your meditation techniques?

Have you ever been treated for your seizures with acupuncture? Homeopathic medicines? Hypnosis? Meditation? Other healing methods?

How has having seizures affected what you think of yourself?

Take a few minutes now to describe yourself, your personality, and your family. Enclose a picture of yourself. Also, have your seizures interfered with your life? If so, how? In your judgment, has your personality changed since the onset of seizures?

Throwing in a curveball, they include: List 5 OTC medications you should not take if you are taking anti-epileptic drugs. (My response: no fair! I check labels! :) )

Geez, I'm never gonna finish filling this thing out (Please list all doctors you've seen in the last 10 years...)

Lesson of the morning:

Even if you miss the opportunity to assume false identities on airplanes, while hitchhiking in the early morning it is very easy, so don't pass it up.

Sarah, do you have any CERES-sort of sources where I can find a good English-language Slovakian textbook? Thanks.

Sooo frustrated with doctors and insurance and medicines and drugs that do funny things to you.

I'm tired of being sick.

I think I'll go throw a pity-party.

Nobody's invited!!

(OK, if you want to come, it will be in the Macalester library computer lab from 2:30-6 today.)

Was going to go to bed, not post, after girl's night at Zuzana's house, but I felt obligated to respond to Erin's cruel comment on my last post.

My dental hygenist, I'll have you know, was AMAZED at the quality of my "home care" and how beautiful and pearly white my teeth are. (Well she didn't say the last part but I could tell she was dying to.) I continue to astound my dentist with my infrequent visits (cause I always forget when I'm home) and then how gorgeous my chompers are when I go. SO THERE!!!!

I'm sorry no postcard from the Ice Palace. We found the post office, but Paul was right (hmm, I shouldn't put that in writing) -- I should have brought something to mail. The line to the merchandise tent was almost as long as the line to get into the castle. Most of the people I think were just waiting to buy hot chocolate, but that's where I would have been able to get a postcard or sumpthin'. I can send a picture though when I get this roll developed, which will probably be next summer at the rate I take pictures.

(No electricity? Those terrorist bastards!)

Who I don't like:
Gtown housing
Why:
"It would have helped if you had told us you were leaving this semester..."
HOW ABOUT SOME INTER-OFFICE COMMUNICATION, PEOPLE!!
Cause boy, the offices that GIVE you money sure seem to be on the ball about whether or not you're there, but the offices that want money FROM you seem to conveniently never notice when you're not there and billable.

Off to dentist to be told how pretty and sparkling my teeth are.

First, my sincere apologies to Bridget...and a song would be quite comforting knowing that my time in the free world was probably coming to a close. Also I could speak in code to you and you would know exactly what I was talking about. (See future posts.) Oh man would that confound those TSA thugs. And surely land me in a cement cell once and forever.

Second thought from the plane (1754, I was already telling you this I believe, but I will post it for everyone else):

I really didn't feel like talking to anyone on the plane, and last time I flew from DC to MSP I had such a talker next to me, wouldn't shut up even after I told her I was going to go to sleep, etc...so I was thinking of tactics to get out of talking to people on the airplane like that. Pretend I was deaf, or didn't speak english? Nah, they'd probably just happen to speak whatever language I made up, just my luck. I couldn't pull out my magazine, cause they would probably start commenting on it and want to look at it with me. Didn't have any headphones, plus you can't use them for the beginning part of the flight. Finally on the airplane I hit upon a great idea: let them talk to me! I was just going to get a great chance to practice using false identities. I even began making some up for the second flight. I was really excited to get a talker. (Unfortunately, I didn't get one.)

First identity: Since I was wearing a Georgetown sweatshirt, I needed a reason for that. I figured I could have just come back from visiting my girlfriend who goes to Gtown, and heading back to Minnesota to work...somewhere...details weren't certain. Maybe going to the U for school, maybe just going back to waitress. But I was definitely going to play the L card as much as I could (ahem) and see if I could make them uncomfortable, and if I could, then goody, cause it was a 3-hour full flight, so they couldn't change seats. Yay!

I forget my 2nd and 3rd identities. I know I came up with 3. Then fell asleep. And if anyone has any ideas, they are welcome to share them and I am certainly willing to try them out around the city here if I think they fit me enough. (I've got to be realistic and know something about the assumed personas though, no stretching things too far or I could get caught in an awkward trap.)

Today: Target, Walgreens, perhaps other errand-running. Going to get organizers and clean room. Evening: work on overdue paper, nibble nibble. Almost done with first section of it, then I will have a template for the other sections, and it will go more quickly.

Some thoughts from the airplane:

If I were to get off the airplane and be immediately whisked away by the TSA (FBI) for intense interrogation, what would be my reaction? (And why, might you ask, would they do this? Who knows, maybe somebody planted something in my suitcase...after all, it was only closed with twist-ties. Or maybe in all their touching of my underwear some of the cocaine from the suitcase before mine got transferred into mine and their sensors picked it up and decided I was obviously from the Q. There are myriad reasons I could go into, and trust me, I thought of most of them on this flight.)

First I was thinking, who would my phone call be to? But then I decided that I really needed to pee and my first question would be, sure, I will of course come with you, but may I please use the bathroom first? I figure that knowing that I had to pee though would then be used as a form of torture in the interrogation process (not allowing me to use the bathroom). That's ok, I'm not afraid to pee on myself when necessary. (When NECESSARY, S! I'm not going to let them get to me, after all!!)

Then I got to the phone call question, and before I decided that actually they wouldn't be officially 'arresting' me, just 'questioning' me, and it's the TSA, not the police, I bet they wouldn't have to read me my rights, let me see a lawyer, or GIVE ME A PHONE CALL!! I thought about who I would call. My parents? I don't know. My dad was probably still en route home and would be no good to me, and my mom would probably just get worried. I thought about calling Paul to let him know I wouldn't be in at the proper time that night, and to have him call my parents at some point. Then I thought of calling my roommates in washington for some advice on dealing with the interrogators. But I considered that perhaps one of my roommates wouldn't want to be associated particularly with someone picked up by the FBI for whatever crime I had supposedly committed. (Hi, S!) Or that I shouldn't call the house where I took a picture of a terrorist. Hmm, great, I bet they would grab the camera out of my backpack and develop that film, too.

So overall, I really haven't come to a conclusion on this one. I suppose I really don't need to since like I said I probably wouldn't get a phone call, but really, this was bothering me a whole lot. And I would want to call somebody if for nothing else to give them a clue as to where to find my body when I never showed up again.

That's probably about as much as Summer can process right now, so I'll post more later. I've got a whole bunch.
