goddammit, i've been tagged. here it is, "four meme":
(caitlin won't set up her blog to include permalinks, so i am forced to just give you the whole thing in the link. look for jan. 14. and caitlin thought i never read her blog. tsk tsk.)
Four Jobs:
A sampling--
The Pizza Place.
I worked at Davanni's for a few months (ok, probably less than that), where I learned that the stench of a pizza kitchen will NEVER leave your jeans, no matter how many times they are washed. get a second pair. most of the people i worked with were on work-release, so that made for some interesting stories. but working the hoagie line, before you step up to the pizza counter, can get a little lonely because it's usually just one person there, unless it gets really busy. it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't the best.
The Irish Store.
I worked at the Irish Store in the Doran kingdom for years. I'd say...4 years, I guess. Folded a lot of sweaters, but also sampled a lot of irish (well, british -- cadbury) candy. Even wrote to Cadbury when their new chocolate was not all it was promised (and received an apology and stationery in return). Wore the claddaghs, knew the shamrock princesses, hung out at the irish fair. spent a lot of time staring at the wall on sunday afternoons when no one came in, and there's only so many times you can fold the sweaters. over and over again. or windex the jewelry case.
The Diner.
One summer I worked the night shift as a waitress at the Uptowner. I had always wanted to be a waitress at a diner. And then I did it. And it sucked (just as I had always imagined). Mainly it just paid so bad -- it wouldn't have been as bad if I had gotten paid more, to make it worth working 11 hours (sometimes) overnight, getting tipped crap by drunkies, standing on my feet all night, pretending it was funny or cute when people grabbed my ass (wanted the tips, didn't I?) or asked for my phone number...gahr. But Paul used to come in and visit during the slow times, and that was nice, and I liked Khalid the cook (Hani could have a temper...I learned how to swear in Arabic, that's for sure...beyond what Rasha had already exposed me to).
The Corp.
How could we forget the Corp? The most unprofessional job I've ever worked at. (Oh, did I say that out loud?) Hahaha, the corp. It still amazes me that we've begun making a profit -- except that may just be because the accountants are in a permanent state of drunkenness and perhaps mixed up the debit and credit columns. But I still got paid roughly every 2 weeks or whenever they felt like it, so that was ok. And I worked longer than anyone else besides Alex, so that was also cool. And we drank in the back room. And had hot scandalous parties. Really, when are you ever going to work at a place like that again and not be seriously sketched out?
Four movies I could watch over and over:
Hmmmm...
Love Actually, and that I don't even have to think about, because I do watch it over and over. Sometimes I would just have it on in the background when I was doing things, because that was nice.
I guess Lord of the Rings, except they're so fucking long...
My guilty pleasure, Return to Me, which most people haven't seen but I love (and it makes me cry, just like LA, which is always a sign of a good movie). Thanks Carolyn, for introducing me to that.
And...uhhh...oh, did I not write Harold and Maude yet? I mean, I don't know if I could constantly watch it, in a loop, but it does rock pretty hard. Seriously. Wow. And now they're making a broadway version, Landon tells me. Haha, remember the scene when Harold is talking to the priest about getting married and the priest starts talking about Maude's breasts? That was horrible.
The movie I never want to see again? Well, I think we all know that one. I was going to write it but I think that will give me nightmares. And now I can't even mention what it is about because I think I will freak out. I really need to see a therapist about this, I believe. And no, Paul and Summer, it is NOT funny and I do NOT need to receive a present in a box.
Four Places I've Lived:
Well, I guess this is pretty easy:
I was born in South Bend, Indiana; then we moved to Duluth, MN, then down to the Twin Cities (I am cheating there so I can include living both in St. Paul AND Minneapolis). And I have lived in Washington, DC for the last million years while trying to finish up school (right now, since the semester has started, I have kinda felt like I am just skipping school and I really ought to be in class with you guys. It is a very strange feeling.)
Four TV Shows I love to watch:
Duh, this is easy. Scrubs, ER, Law and Order SVU, Law and Order CI. In that order.
Four Places I've Been on Vacation:
My grandparents' cabin, on Lake Metigoshe, in the Turtle Mountains on the border with Canada. (This is also right at the Peace Garden, which is kinda a cool place. And the band camp I used to attend. Wow. I hope no one read that.)
I have also gone to Glacier Park in Montana, to Paris (and Lisieux), and to Germany.
Four Websites I visit daily:
Uh, gmail, my georgetown email, usually CNN, and I guess lately government job websites.
Four of my Favorite Foods:
Potatoes, obv.
Chipotle. (Regardless of the fact that it is part of the Evil Empire.)
Orange tofu beef at Harmony.
Formerly, the Chicken Cobb Salad at Tombs, which has been sadly discontinued during my summer absence.
Four Places I'd rather be:
Can't think of much, for that...I mean, DC, if I had a job, but as I don't....and since Johanna and I had so much fun skating and sledding and hot chocolating and stuff yesterday I can't really complain about the cold here...
Four Albums I Can't live without:
Cat Stevens. Saturday Night and (my own compilation of) Harold and Maude. (No real one exists in the world.)
Jayhawks. Smile and Rainy Day Music.
Four People to Tag:
man, no fair to tag me last!!
Bridget.
Tim L.
Lizz H.
those are the only people who stand a chance of doing this, and i doubt any of them will see their names. Martins, why don't you start a blog up so I can tag you?
