Postictal laughter following absence status epilepticus

Abstract
Acute pathologic neurologic laughter has been described as an ictal phenomenon in epilepsy, as a result of electrical brain stimulation to the cortex and to deep brain structures, in brain tumors, and in stroke. We report what is, to our knowledge, the first report of a case of postictal pathologic laughter. Previously diagnosed with medically refractory complex partial seizures, our patient was admitted to the hospital with phenytoin toxicity. During video-EEG monitoring she experienced multiple brief absence seizures as well as a prolonged episode of absence status epilepticus. Immediately following cessation of the seizure she began to laugh. Her laughter was mirthful and infectious. This lasted several minutes and was followed immediately by several minutes of crying and then a return to normal. We propose that diffuse cortical inhibition led to release of subcortical structures involved in emotional expression. Possible neural substrates of laughter are discussed.

This is an article available in the latest issue of Epilepsy & Behavior, an interesting publication (this month they debated whether Napoleon had pseudo- or 'real' seizures, finally decided he had both, "conqueror's syndrome" meaning he had psychogenic seizures due to all the stress of ruling the world (man it's a tough job) and real seizures due to complications from the gonorrhea his cheatin' wife gave him. The real ones they think are the reason he couldn't hold on to his job as world ruler, cause of his lapses in concentration kinda hurt on the battle plan-making. And they say he wouldn't have stayed in Russia in minus-30 degree weather if he had been able to make decisions, but oh well (and birds fell frozen out of the sky! So cool! How come they don't do that in MN?)). ANYWAYS, this article I just posted talks about what I have been known to do after/between seizures -- start laughing (for some reason I often start laughing after seizures, I can't control it, and I really don't feel that it's very funny...) and then suddenly without warning start crying uncontrollably. I know 1754 saw it last week, and S and B observed it out here during the Mother-Seizure in November (S found it quite interesting, this is how I know it happened). Unlike the patient in this article, I will often go into another seizure at the crying point.
I emailed the author of this article to tell them that their patient's not a COMPLETE freak cause I exist too. Haha. But I always thought it was just a lil' quirk of mine. Hmm. Maybe it's something worth mentioning to my neuro. Lots of quirks of mine I usually find out long time later are actually things I should have mentioned a long time ago. god I'm a freak. kinda fun, oh well, thought everyone was like this, guess i'm super-special. I think my brain's gonna set on fire soon with all this electricity.
If anyone wants the full article I can give it to you but I need to give you my PW to access it, so let me know.
