So I've had the first class of each course I'm taking by now. I think it should be a good (challenging, but learning a lot) semester. African Military I don't know anything about, but I read the professor's book beforehand so I feel a lot more prepared and I'm glad I did that.
Ethics & IR I started last semester before I dropped out and I know all the tips about that class so I think I can do OK in it. Bioterrorism sounds very interesting. We are going to focus on anthrax and smallpox and different effective ways of terrorist attacks.
One interesting point that the professor brought up is that while it is likely that a biological attack will come at some point, since it is relatively easy, that is one reason that it may NOT come anytime soon. Think about it: if the point of it is to spread terror, then you don't even have to do the attack. People are already panicky about having a biological attack -- remember all the duct tape and plastic sheeting? Mission accomplished. If your goal is to kill a lot of people, then yeah you have to do the actual attack then.
Islam in the West is I guess what I thought it would be, but pleasingly I am one of the people in the class who knows most about it (I'd hope I am, considering I am doing my thesis on this!!)
There was one football player, your typical jock I'd say, -- we had to go around the room and tell who we were and why we were taking the class -- and he said that he holds pretty stereotypical views of Muslims and so he was taking the class because he figured he should be more openminded. I thought that was pretty decent of him, at least he's willing to admit that he needs to change and then actually go and work on it.
last night erin and I ordered marjans (I meant to split it in half and save some for lunch today, but I accidentally ate it all...but luckily there was a free freshman lunch so I stole some of that; but then unfortunately my plan worked too well so this obnoxious kid was talking to me and he was like, "So, you live in (this freshman dorm), huh?" I said "uh....I'm NOT a freshman" (at the same time thinking, I'm three years older than you!!!) I think he felt pretty stupid -- good, he should! But now he's trying to act all cool so I've seen him twice more around campus today and he keeps going out of his way to say hi to me. Garh.
Last night after dinner we went to see the campus movie, Mean girls. I wish Natasha were still here, because they started the movie without any sound for about the first 5 minutes, and then when they got sound they made the picture all blurry. Natasha would never have let that happen.
The movie was alright, there were some funny parts, but I didn't like the ending all that much. Oh well, it was an enjoyable night though. Then I went home and called johanna to tell her her bedtime story, but she was soooo tired that we got halfway through and then she asked me if we could just finish it the next night. So it's to be continued tonight!
I wanted to go to Target today: I need knives, pots & pans, a wok, silverware, plates, etc (plus a lot of other stuff) but Erin said that the GUTS buses don't resume Saturday service for a while, and that is WAY too much heavy stuff to walk all the way across the potomac with. So I guess I'll have to wait a while. Also, I really expected to get my box of stuff today which I packed last week, and I asked my mom to send it on Tuesday, but she didn't do it until yesterday (Friday), and I looked on the website and the expected delivery date is next Thursday. Yay. If I had known it would have taken this long there are things that I definitely would have smushed into my suitcase.
Tonight Abbey and I are going to see Garden State, and afterwards we are going to eat dinner at Harmony, because she wanted somewhat healthy food and this place gives you big enough portions that you can definitely take a lot home with you (when i went last weekend I got enough for three (small) meals).
So that should be fun.
