Following up on the last post: After several days of not knowing how Jude and Michelle were doing down in Hattiesburg, Paul got ahold of them last night. From what they said and the pictures I've seen, it looks like it would be big enough if just Hattiesburg was hit by the storm -- unfortunately, compared to New Orleans they look relatively unscathed. I called Jude tonight but was only able to talk for a moment as I was at work and a million people chose that moment to come in. So I said I'd call back this weekend.
NPR said today that all the Washington colleges are preparing to take in Katrina college students. Apparently all the Jesuit universities got together and agreed to take in all the college students from Loyola, so we're going to get a bunch. Paul says that Macalester is planning on taking in 60 Dillard students, and housing them -- 60 is a big number for Mac, and HOUSING them too -- so that's pretty cool of Mac I think. I haven't heard any details about the GU kids.
DC is also taking in a bunch of refugees (can you believe we're using that term about AMERICANS?!) into our convention center; I just emailed the local Red Cross about volunteer opportunities here for Katrina relief, so I hope that I am able to do something, because I can't donate a lot of money or anything, but especially as it's the beginning of the semester I can donate my time. Whatever you've got, huh?
Well, peace out.
