Ha. My campus is awesome.
On Monday some dude was walking around by 34th and P, and got mugged and promptly shot in the foot. He then walked the 11 blocks to the emergency room with a shot foot. That's awesome. (PS--there are houses around there...with doorbells...and presumably phones that are able to call 911...)
Then last night, there was a party in the sophomore apartments. Around 12:45 two DPS officers came, at the same time as some sketchy ~25-year old guy "with frizzy hair in a ponytail." It wasn't really clear whether or not he was actually WITH the DPS officers or if he just showed up at the same time. But anyway, the DPS officers came and said they weren't breaking up the party but they had to turn the music down, so the kids did. (This is all coming from someone who was at the party at that point.) The DPS officers then left, but this guy stayed.
The kid told me that by that time, their keg was virtually kicked and there were only about 20 people there, who all were friends. So it was rather odd to have this guy standing there...not drinking, not talking to anyone, just hanging out. One of the hosts approaches him and starts talking to him - not aggressively, just trying to figure out his story. He asks who he knows there, what he's up to, and when he finds out he doesn't actually have any legitimate purpose there, he said, well, maybe it's better if you just left. At this point the dude hauls off and slams him in the nose and jaw. So now the kid has a broken nose and at least a split lip if nothing worse in his mouth, and he punches back -- breaking his hand. When the "suspect" (S1, as metro called him) first hit the kid, about 4 other guys jump on him and begin whaling away. "We totally could have taken him out," this kid brags, "...since there were about 20 of us. But then we found out he was packing."
Yup, so this guy whips out a gun and shoots a kid in the head. Awesome. Then he runs away. (Well, at least they accomplished their goal of getting him to leave.)
Luckily the kid wasn't a centimeter over, because the bullet managed to graze the side of his head, not his brain. But everyone gets shocked when this happens and are all looking around not sure that they actually heard a gun go off, when all of a sudden this kid says, "Um, I think I need to go to the hospital," and they turn around and there he is holding his very bloody hand to his head. Apparently he is as ok as someone who got "grazed in the head" can be. So that's good.
But when metro came to take statements, the people described the two DPS officers that came. And being as these officers were still on duty, it was fairly easy to find who they were -- only, only one came. And in his statement he said that he came all alone -- not without the S1, because that might be true, but he said he came without another officer, which was obviously false. So if he lied about that, ...
Well, the kids in the apartment have rich parents and some have already flown out here, so this is finally one "attempted murder" case that will be followed up on in DC. (I was informed today that it's attempted murder if it's above the waist. So always shoot down, folks.)
